NBR Dia. 69 LNER Dia. 34B brake van (Kit Refs 9107 and 9117)

The prototype

This kit is for Reid’s first design of brake van built from 1902 to 1909. Developed from the original Holmes Dia.33B design of 1890 (kits 9105 / 9115 & 9106 / 9116), they were the first to incorporate a steel-plated guard’s lookout central on the bodyside. They were fitted with clasp brakes though the weight diagram from the LNER period states that vans to this design had the single brake. Available photographs however show only the clasp brake version but push-out brakes are provided just in case new evidence comes to light. Only one was to see BR service, 700195 which was withdrawn in 1954. A Dia.34B was purchased after withdrawal from the mainline by the Weymss Private Railway and lasted into the 60s.
